COORDINATE VIEWMinecraft portal coordinate conversion
Minecraft's Nether and Overworld use an 8:1 horizontal coordinate ratio. The same conversion applies in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Only X and Z scale; Y is a height reference, not a value to divide by eight.
Overworld to Nether
Nether X = Overworld X ÷ 8
Nether Z = Overworld Z ÷ 8Nether to Overworld
Overworld X = Nether X × 8
Overworld Z = Nether Z × 8| Direction | Starting position | Exact destination | Floor block position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overworld → Nether | 800, 64, -400 | 100, 64, -50 | 100, 64, -50 |
| Overworld → Nether | -81, 70, -1 | -10.125, 70, -0.125 | -11, 70, -1 |
| Nether → Overworld | 100, 64, -50 | 800, 64, -400 | 800, 64, -400 |
For a negative coordinate, floor means toward negative infinity: -81 ÷ 8 = -10.125, so the containing block is -11, not -10. Choose Nearest if you want the closest whole-block position instead.
Planning a linked pair of Nether portals
- Record the X, Y and Z of your existing portal and select the correct starting dimension.
- Convert X and Z using the 8:1 ratio. Keep the exact destination available when deciding where to place the other portal.
- Choose a safe, valid height in the destination dimension, clear enough space and build the second portal near the calculated X/Z position.
- Travel through in both directions. If the game chooses another portal, inspect nearby portals and their heights before moving either one.
Matching coordinates improve placement, but do not guarantee a one-to-one link. Existing portals and three-dimensional distance affect which portal the game selects. A coordinate converter cannot predict terrain, validate a seed or simulate every portal-search rule.
Teleport commands require permission or cheats and move the player directly; they do not create, activate or test a portal link.
Nether portal questions
How does the 8:1 ratio work?
Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to find the corresponding Nether position. Multiply Nether X and Z by 8 to go back. Y does not scale between dimensions.
Why do negative coordinates round down?
Floor identifies the block containing the exact position: X = -81 becomes -10.125 in the Nether, which lies in block -11. Nearest rounds to the closest block instead, giving -10 in this example. Both are approximations of the exact position.
Will these portals always link?
No. This is a coordinate converter, not a portal-link simulator. The game also considers existing portals, their distance and their height. Build near the exact converted position and check both travel directions in your world.
Which edition and commands are supported?
The 8:1 coordinate ratio applies to Java and Bedrock. The generated cross-dimension commands use Java 1.13+ or Bedrock 1.19.50+ syntax and require cheats or operator permission. Y is carried over as a reference; choose a safe height, and keep Bedrock Nether builds below Y 128.
